Library Tasks before the Upgrade to the Production Databases
Required
- Make sure your computers meet the minimum requirements outlined
- Document your current preferences in all Voyager clients
- If your library does not use CARLI's Voyager Client Update Checker, make a copy of important Voyager files that you have customized into a folder outside of the Voyager folder to preserve them from being overwritten during manual installation of 6.5.3 clients. Files may include things like the voyager.ini, eisreport.mdb, callslip.ini, crcnotes.mdb, acqrpts.mdb, Acqbib.cfg, tag tables, record template files, etc.
- WebVoyage URL syntax will change with Voyager 7's "tomcat" WebVoyage. Consider where you may have incorporated persistent links to catalog records, or canned search URLs, so that you can change them after the upgrade. Do not make changes before the upgrade. To prepare for the changes, you may use CARLI's WebVoyage syntax converter.
Optional
- Download the Voyager 7.1 clients and access the upgraded training database, or connect to the upgraded training database's OPAC, to investigate features and changes in the new version of the software. For instructions on how to access the upgraded training database see: How to access the Alternate Training Databases.
- Read ExLibris Documentation, including: Release Notes, Release Handbooks, and User's Guides (see Documentation below)
- Attend Forums and Webinars focusing on new options and workflows
- If you have incorporated an OPAC search box into your library web pages, you will need to revise it to work correctly with Voyager 7's "tomcat" WebVoyage. Although you can prepare the revised search box in advance, you should not install it until after the upgrade, because a version 7-ready search box will not function correctly with Voyager version 6. So that you can prepare the changes, CARLI has created a version 7-ready search box generator. Note that this generator will produce a search box that submits searches to the production catalog address, "i-share.carli.illinois.edu." In order to test the box's function before the upgrade has been completed you can temporarily edit its new html to replace "i-share.carli.illinois.edu" with "trainvoy.carli.illinois.edu." Results of searches executed in a training database will differ from the results you might expect from your production database.
Library Workflows/Tasks During Upgrade
Optional
- When applicable, use the Offline Backup Circulation function to record charges during system downtime.
Library Tasks After the Upgrade
Required
- If you used Offline Backup Circulation during the upgrade, make a back up copy (in a folder other than the Voyager folder) of your Offline Capture File.
- If you did not use CARLI's Voyager Client Update Checker, you will need to download and install the new Voyager 7.1 staff clients.
- If you used Offline Backup Circulation during the upgrade downtime, load your Offline Capture File.
- If you have links from anywhere into the catalog that are elaborated beyond "https://i-share.carli.illinois.edu/xxx" (for instance, if you offer a deep link from your library web page all the way to a specific I-Share search page), those URLs will need to be updated. See CARLI's link builder page for details.
- If you have incorporated an OPAC search box into your library web pages, you will need to revise it to work correctly with Voyager 7's "tomcat" WebVoyage. To assist with this, CARLI has created a version 7-ready search box generator.
- Update any URLs you have for "canned" WebVoyage searches or links to particular catalog records. It may help to use CARLI's WebVoyage syntax converter.
- If your library uses a link resolver such as SFX and has activated your I-Share local OPAC as a target, reconfigure the target settings to connect users the new version of WebVoyage.
- If you have profiled links to your local catalog from WorldCat, you will need to update them. See Links from FirstSearch to I-Share WebVoyage Library Catalogs.
- (If Applicable) Reinstall/upgrade any of the Gary Strawn programs present on staff PCs. This must be done after the Voyager 7.1 clients have been installed.
- (If Applicable) File a WRO to inform CARLI Data Services if any recurring bulk import jobs (e.g., OCLC daily loads, Marcive, PromptCat) for your library should have the item record copy number default to something OTHER than the number 1.
Optional
- If you did not use CARLI's Voyager Client Update Checker, staff that use the cataloging client may wish to download and install the revised consortial tag tables to their PC. The tag tables are available from http://www.carli.illinois.edu/mem-prod/I-Share/cat.html. Instructions for
downloading the updated tag tables are available from http://www.carli.illinois.edu/mem-prod/I-Share/secure/cat/tags/tagtables_download.pdf- New Voyager cataloging functionality for ISBN/ISSN validation required revised comments regarding client preference settings for all I-Share Shared Macro Express Macros that work with bib records. Existing bib record macros will continue to work under Voyager 7.1 IF staff disable all options on the Validation tab in cat client preferences. Staff may wish to download the revised bib record shared macros as a reminder about these preference settings.
