Commentary from the VISCom PAC Task Force
Primary Format: The codes for Primary Format are a combination of the Type and BLvl from the fixed fields. Only one 2-character code can be used for each Primary Format, but the ? wildcard option is available and was used for BLvl for all formats other than Book, Magazines/Journals, and Films/Video. The Task Force opted to omit Archives/Manuscripts because institutions would be more likely to have a wide variety of material in Archives and could opt for a location limit. Mixed Material and Visual Material were also omitted for the same reason as well as the consideration that patrons might have a difficult time distinguishing among Kits, Films/Videos and Visual Material.
Additional Format Specifications: The one character codes used are taken from the 007 $a. Because of the considerable confusion this limit can cause and the redundancy with some of the Primary Format limits, the Task Force opted to display Film Reels and Video/DVD farther down the list.
