Best Practices Recommendation: Call Slip Processing When Library is Closed

Ex Libris recommends that Call Slip queues be processed as frequently as possible. In a UB/Request Promotion environment, Call Slip queues that go unprocessed can sometimes cause severe disruptions in the progression of requests. There are times, however, when libraries close for extended periods of time during holiday and/or semester breaks. In those intervals, some requests get promoted and filled, only to sit in delivery bags until the library re-opens; some requests expire and can't be processed at all. In order to alleviate these conditions, CARLI recommends the following:

  1. Extend the Call Slip expiration and Archive settings in System Administration-->Call Slips-->Queues-->Values Tab to AT LEAST the number of days you intend to be closed, and not processing call slips.
  2. Extend the Hold Shelf Life by the same number of days: System Administration-->Circulation-->Circ Policy Definitions-->Matrix tab-->Intervals tab

NOTE:  If your library will not be closed for an extended period of time—less than a week, for example—there is no need to change the consortial, recommended settings for these values.

Remember to reset these values back to the CARLI recommended settings when the library returns to normal service.
