Member Access to the Five College Library Depository
All CARLI member libraries are now affiliate members of the Five College Library Depository, through an agreement completed in May 2011.
What is the Five College Library Depository?
Managed by the Five College consortium of Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the Five College Library Depository is a trusted repository of persistent print collections. The Depository collection consists of a single paper copy, shared by the consortium, of the journals in six electronic journal collections:
Access to the physical volumes of the journals in the Five College Depository is available to CARLI member libraries that subscribe to the digitized collections, when online access is unavailable or when CARLI member libraries are unable to print successfully from the online or scanned copies.
Access to the Materials Includes:
- Scanning and transmission of articles from journals if the electronic equivalent is unavailable online due to scheduled maintenance or system failure
- Hard copy of articles from the journals if the requestor has been unable to print successfully from the online equivalent
- Circulation of bound and unbound volumes or issues of journals under the following conditions:
- Use of these volumes is restricted to a monitored location in the library of the requesting institution
- All loan periods are for two weeks from the time the item is mailed from the Depository until it is received back by the Depository.
- Requested items will only be sent using carriers that provide tracking services
- All materials stored in the FCLD are also available for on-site use in the FCLD Reading Room with prior arrangement. Appointment times are available between 8:30 A.M. and 4:00 P.M., Monday through Friday. Appointments may be made directly with FCLD via email or by calling (413) 542-8903. For more information and for maps and directions to the facility in Amherst, MA, visit the Five College Library Depository web site.
Accessing Materials within the Depository
To request a photocopy, scan or fax of an article: Email the Depository directly. Articles will be supplied as scanned images, photocopies, or faxes. PDF files will be emailed directly to users if possible. Photocopies will be delivered to the user’s library, where they will be held for pick-up or placed in campus mail, at the discretion of the library. Requested items are processed within 24 hours. The Depository is closed on weekends.

To add material to the Depository Collection
If your library is withdrawing materials because the journals are available in an electronic collection, and you would like to donate your items to the Depository, please:
- Confirm that the Depository does not already have the materials by searching the Five College Library Catalog.
- If the item appears and is available in the location “Five College Depository” or “FC Depository,” check the holdings by choosing that location.
- If your journal and volumes are not in the Depository, please e-mail support@carli.illinois.edu with the subject heading, “Items for Five College Depository.” Within your message, please indicate the exact material to be donated. CARLI staff will confirm with the Five College Depository that the material is needed and will work with you to donate your materials.
