IUG I-Share OPAC Team
Annual Report
2006-2007
The I-Share OPAC Team has worked hard this year to improve our users’ experience of the catalog. Some improvements implemented this year include:
- Modifications to the left-anchored Title and Journal Title searches to allow users to search either with or without an initial article
- Re-enabling of MyOPAC features for interested libraries, including designing new buttons for these features to be displayed in the local default catalog
- Development of the New Titles List add-on, now in production for several I-Share libraries
- Movement of the time-out warning clock to a more prominent position
- Testing and implementation of support for the OPAC as an SFX “source”
- Assorted small changes to the display of records in the catalog, including, in response to a bug introduced by the upgrade to Voyager 6.1, changes to which columns are hyperlinked on the Titles List
- Enhanced functionality to redirect users from the Universal Catalog to their local catalog when they attempt to place a call slip request, since call slip requests are no longer possible in the UC in Voyager 6.1
- Links to the revised Instruction Team OPAC tutorials throughout the catalog
- Assorted revisions to help pages and error messages
In addition, the Team has:
- Submitted a proposal to IUG that encourages increased emphasis on usability testing for the catalog
- Developed an OPAC Enhancements Status Log (http://www.carli.illinois.edu/comms/iug/iug-opac/iug-opac-reports/opac-tasklist.html) to track suggested enhancements and what has been done to implement them
- Approved some modifications in preparation for the next WebVoyage rollout, including a fix to the way the redirected corporate name search (610 field) operates and addition of the HKEY search to the Advanced Search Page, allowing searches of holdings information
Some projects currently in progress include:
- Developing a CSS editor for the OPAC to enable more libraries to customize their local catalog to their color preferences, and to improve accessibility
- Crafting a proposal for IUG on the subject of adding a spell-checking utility to the OPAC
- Investigating the use of map "mash-ups" in the public catalog to help patrons more easily find I-Share libraries
