Indexing Contents Notes (MARC field 505, second indicator 0).
The 505 field contains the transcribed table of contents from the cataloged item. OBDR considered a suggestion to include 505 subfield t in the left anchored title search. Similarly, the 505 subfield r includes statement of responsibility (author) information so we included this field in our discussions. We considered both the enhanced access to contents of works and the possible confusion when table of contents entries would be retrieved with other titles or author information. On balance, we felt that some kind of better access would be beneficial to users but were unsure if left anchored searching was the best approach. To this end, we examined the advantages and limitation created by cataloging rules and practice. The data in these subfields is not by the rules for access points; title and authorship information is transcribed from the piece. This means that initial articles cannot be coded with non-filing indicators; authors typically appear in direct order and are not subject to authority control. In addition, we believe including these fields in the index would only be possible with full database reindexing. For these reasons we are not recommending inclusion of these fields in left-anchored indexes at this time. If reindexing does occur in the future, the inclusion of these fields in title and author left anchored indexes should be carefully considered at that time. In order to provide better access immediately, we recommend adding 505 subfield t to the title keyword index and 505 subfield r to the author name keyword index. It should be noted that the 505 field is not always enhanced, and the data is not fully controlled as it would be for other access points. As with all indexing changes, we also note the importance of disseminating information about the effects of the change to member libraries. |
