OPAC TEAM Meeting Minutes
Tuesday, November 11, 2008 10:00-noon
Present: Karen Becker, Nancy Bohm, Jana Brubaker, Kathy Chang, Keith Eiten, Jonathan Gorman, Gregory Morrison, Page Weston
- Minutes for the October 14, 2008 meeting were previously approved via email.
- Paige reported that ISU has discovered that their summary holdings do not display in WebVoyage if the second indicator in the 866 field is 7. ISU has modified their holdings configuration to remedy this. She asked if the team had an opinion about making this configuration change for all I-Share libraries. The team agreed with Paige that this is a change in the default that should be made for all libraries. Nancy mentioned that her library has had a problem with suppressed records showing up in VuFind. Paige thought that had been resolved and will look into it.
- Paige told the team that 47 libraries have accepted the “text me” feature in WebVoyage. Reports from users have been mostly positive, but some are not getting the text messages in a timely manner. This is probably related to the cell phone provider they use.
- Google Book Search stopped working in both WebVoyage and VuFind yesterday morning. Paige said they assume that we were hitting some kind of threshold at Google that limits the number of hits allowed. This might not be a problem if we didn’t use a proxy; however, if no proxy was used, users would get a warning message about a "mixture of secure and insecure elements" on the WebVoyage page, which is bothersome. Paige felt that giving up Google Book Search was preferable to encountering that message every time, and asked the team members for their opinions. Jon suggested that the newer Google Book Search API might be more forgiving and CARLI is investigating this. For now, they have disabled this feature.
- Paige reported that some members of the CARLI staff were meeting today to plan for the upgrade to Voyager 7. Paige said that we can find a list of the enhancements for WebVoyage on SupportWeb. Currently you will need to look at the list of enhancements for 7.0, 7.0.1, 7.0.2, and 7.0.3 to get the full picture.
- Paige said that the secure connections have been implemented, which take over any time a user is required to log in while in VuFind. She was pleased that the transition was not noticeable to users. The main CARLI VuFind developer has just returned from a conference with other VuFind developers. VuFind 1.0 is not yet released. The developers found about eight significant bugs in this version that they felt needed to be addressed. Since this is open-source software, Paige hopes these bugs will be corrected relatively quickly.
- Jon reported on the IUG meeting on Oct. 31 where the charge for the IOPAC Team was discussed. During that meeting the team members expressed their desire to have some people from outside the team perform usability testing to help answer various questions that come up regarding changes to the OPAC that the team might be looking at. IUG will look for schools that have some expertise in usability testing to be in a pool of volunteers that the team can take a list of problems to a couple of times a year. The feedback will help the IOPAC make decisions.
- The team looked at the revised charge for IOPAC. Jon reported, that based on feedback from IUG, he eliminated the section about team member qualifications since IUG is responsible for appointing new members to Users’ Groups Teams. Jon also received clarification regarding the parameters of the team's responsibility. IUG felt that the focus for IOPAC should be the catalog, not things like SFX. If there is some other system that is tangentially related to the catalog that we have concerns about, we are free to consider it as we have time, but in general should refer the matter to IUG. The team approved the revision of the charge, with the exception of some minor punctuation errors. Jon will look it over and send it to IUG for approval in the next couple of days.
- Keith provided a couple of updates from IUG. The CARLI Board is forming focus groups to discuss the future of the ILS. Also, on December 18 there will be Hack Fest where members can work on their SFX configuration and CARLI staff will be available to help.
- The team discussed the customization guidelines that currently exist. Jon and Paige anticipate that when we move to WebVoyage 7.0 these specific guidelines will be largely irrelevant because of changes in the customization process. Team members affirmed, however, that a revised guidelines document that identifies elements of the local OPACs that should be kept consistent with the Universal Catalog and each other will still be beneficial and appropriate.
The next meeting will be December 9 at 10:00.
