CARLI Seeking Committee Volunteers (deadline May 15)

  • Hilary Kraus, Amanda Pippitt, and Jan Sung will be rotating off unless they ask for reappointment. http://www.carli.illinois.edu/comms/volunteer.php
  • Other teams are also looking for new members.

Persistent links in the OPAC

  • Paige showed an example (Newberry Library): Newberry uses this feature without a link on the url. Example:
  • Persistent link to this record: https://i-share.carli.illinois.edu/nby/cgi-. . . =272019
  • The team finalized its wording to Persistent link to this page:url with no link provided.

VuFind “formats” and other specs

  • Status update: Paige reported she showed the most current VuFind during the Resource Sharing Forum held on 4/16/2008 in Springfield. She also reported that the url for testing VuFind may be released to the 13 early adopters as early as next week. The early adopters were comprised of libraries with different characteristics: Local call slip user or not, OPAC customized or not, Private vs. Public, and 2 and 4 year colleges.
  • Paige asked Nancy to supply icons for the formats at a gross facet level. At this point they are: the formats identified by record type and biblvl code combinations in WebVoyage. Nancy will search for good icons already in existence before she spends her time to create them. At a deeper facet level, we may divide certain format into more detailed ones. For example, sound recordings into CD, LP, and so on.
  • Nancy asked when she needed to do this in what size. Timing and sizing are negotiable.

Questions about Syndetics functionality:
Greg asked if Syndetics could be turned on only at UC level. It can be turned on at a local level if a library subscribes to the services. There are different options in Syndetics functions. Each individual library can decide what to purchase.

Voyager Testing Script
It was agreed that the draft was a strong one overall. Now some improvement is needed to make the document look coherent, in order to make it a good tool for libraries. A team of three volunteers was formed to go over the draft to make some recommendations for how best to structure and disseminate the document.
Volunteers: Nancy Bohm, Tom Goetz, Kathy Roegge (UIS)
Timeline: By next meeting (5/7/2008, Wednesday)

Nancy had a question for Jan about circ script if both Call Slip daemon and MyAccount were needed to be open side by side to test the script. Jan answered yes and added a line in the testing script.

Z39.50
Z39.50 is a client-server protocol to search and retrieve information from remote databases. It is for access to cataloging data in our Voyager database for public display needed for certain services. Those services include, but not limited to, EndNote, Procite, RefWork, WebFeat, SFX, and Bowker’s Books in Print. The only Z39.50 client CARLI staff have easy access to, for testing, is the one on the CARLI SFX server.

Since Paige mentioned that EIU has incorporated SFX function into OPAC display, I am showing you what it would look like in the OPAC. Several libraries are using this function.

Integrating Google Books API

  • ICAT supports implementing this enhancement.
  • In response to the question, “One of the big questions is whether the consortium should focus effort on an upgrade to version 6.5.4, in order to accommodate the Google Book Search API. It will not function in 6.5.3, our current version. Another option is to wait for the upgrade to 7.0.1,” Paige informed us that at this point CARLI does not have intention to upgrade to any of the in-between versions of 6.5.Xs. [Paige learned after the OPAC Team meeting that in fact we are considering an upgrade to 6.5.4 at some point.] However, Voyager will be upgraded to Voyager 7.x.x at an unknown date. However, Google Books can be supported now, in version 6.5.3. See: http://develop.carli.illinois.edu/eiu_stage/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?DB=local&BBID=38362
