I-Share OPAC Team Minutes

March 13, 2007 Meeting (Conference Call)

Present: Hilary Kraus, Paige Weston, Kathe Conley, Cason Snow, Jon Gorman, Nancy Bohm, Amanda Pippitt, Jan Sung, Steve Wright

The meeting convened at 2 p.m.
The minutes of the February 6, 2007 meeting were approved with one correction (the non-presence of Nancy).

Recommendation from CARLI Digital Collections User Group: This group recom-mended that each CARLI library participating in CARLI Digital Collections add a collec-tion-level record containing a URL (field 856) link to the collection.  We found no con-cerns with their recommendation and approved it.

End-User tutorials: These are almost ready. There was some discussion as to whether existing links would need to be updated.  Paige indicated that the existing redirects should still work, although the ILCSO links could be updated to the present CARLI ad-dress.

We need to review the existing locations of the links in the help files and think of any new ones that are needed.  After some discussion, we decided to parcel out, via e-mail, the various tutorials among the team members for further review.

Redirected corporate name searches: Paige indicated that the current functioning of these searches is probably just a mistake; we all agreed that it should be changed so that all subfields are applied in the search.  There was some discussion of whether or not to implement the change immediately; we decided that the fix should be implemented at some point in the future when there are a number of changes ready to go.

Spellchecking: It’s still uncertain what we are expected to do.  The consensus seemed to be that we should simply list the characteristics of an ideal spellchecker (what it should do, not do, and what authority should be used) and forward that as a proposal.

Jon offered to collect some statistics on misspellings in OPAC searches.  The group as-signed to work on spellchecking will also have a conference call on March 26th at 1 p.m. to discuss the topic in more depth.

New search types: Our usability testing proposal was discussed at the IUG meeting; they appointed a three-person group to prepare a proposal for a permanent testing group.  This group could supervise usability testing of any electronic resource (instead of just the OPAC).

However, this still leaves the new search types question unresolved.  We decided to post a message on the CARLI public services interest group mailing list to see if anyone would be interested in conducting tests of the new searches.  Hilary will draft some text for this message.  Jon offered to post a similar query to the Voyager-L list.

IUG approved our HKEY search proposal, and this will be implemented soon.

CSS for WebVoyage customization: Paige is continuing to work on this and a meeting with Ex Libris seems likely.

New Books list:
Paige shared the CSS editor CARLI staff designed for libraries to cus-tomize their New Books lists.  We declared this to be “great” and “so easy a caveman could do it.”

A New Books toolbar button will also be made available, although customizing libraries would of course have to provide their own.

SFX: Work is continuing on getting this to work like Texas A&M’s implementation.

The meeting adjourned at approximately 3 p.m.

The next meeting will be on April 10, 2007 at 2 p.m.
