I-Share OPAC Team Minutes
January 11, 2007 Meeting at 1:00pm Location: Conference Call @ 217-244-7526 Attendees: Nancy Bohm, , Skip Burhans, Tom Goetz, Jonathan Gorman, Hilary Kraus, Amanda Pippitt Stephen Wright, Jan Sung; CARLI Staff Liaison: Paige Weston. Absent: Kathe Conley, Cason Snow Minutes for 11/27/2006 meeting approved. Usability TestingWhen Hilary asked if a similar usability testing, which was done in the past, would be performed in the future, Paige answered that such a full-blown testing might not be necessary. Whenever there is a need for testing, an individual library can perform with as few as five subjects. Hilary volunteered to draft possible items for testing that would be submitted to IUG. Jan asked Paige where the WebVoyage was in its life cycle. Paige confirmed that there would not be any more development for the current WebVoyage, which meant that it was at the end of its life cycle. But it is still worth putting efforts to make it more user-friendly because there are so many users. Spell-checkersIt was reconfirmed that the committee would submit recommendations on spell-checkers to IUG. A group of people (Kathe, Jon, Jan, and Tom) will submit a draft to the committee for review by the end of January before the committee submits it to the IUG. The draft will include comparisons of the functionalities of the different spell-checkers. The draft does not have to be long but one or two page long reports will be sufficient. New book listPaige reported that CARLI successfully created a new book list using a style sheet. Currently it is added to I-Share OPAC right below the I-Share logo. The team reviewed its functionality and everyone agreed that it was a great addition. http://i-share.carli.illinois.edu/newbooks/ucnewbooks.cgi Jan shared that she felt like that she should put some words in the search box. She realized that all she had to do was to click SEARCH only after Paige told her to do so. She wondered if it was possible to add some wording for clarification. Paige also explained this new book list came form the report server not from the production server so that it cannot provide any up-to-date list. In other words, the latest items a patron can see are the items added to the system the day before. It was asked if the new title list could be added to the OPAC as a tab right next to Reserves in a local OPAC (or next to Advanced search in I-Share OPAC) as Loyola University did. Paige said that it should be possible. Finally, Jon asked if this new book list was Unicode friendly. He learned that php and Unicode did not like each other. Paige said it probably would be ready for individual OPAC by the end of January. Next meeting: Scheduled on 2/6/2007 (Tuesday) at 2 pm. Humbly submitted by Jan Sung |
