Decisions:

  • Minutes approved, with 4 corrections.

Team Reports:

  • Acquisitions & Serials Team
    • Fiscal Period Close questions have been added to the FAQ.
    • HACQFest was successful, with positive feedback.  Might offer these twice a year, limiting registrations to facilitate one-on-one conversations.
    • May plan an open conference call for late August or early September to elicit conversations on the recent Voyager upgrade and any persistent problems.
  • Cataloging and Authority Control Team
    • Reviewed comments on the last joint forum with Acq. & Ser. Team on technical services workflows.
    • Reviewed current objectives that are listed on the annual report.
    • Discussed possible joint forum with Resource Sharing team on shelf inventory.
  • Instruction Team
    • Sponsored two workshops on using Wink for online tutorial creation: in Champaign on June 5, and at Columbia College in Chicago on June 12; responses were positive.  Probably will offer them again, since there were long waiting lists for both workshops.
  • OPAC Team
    • June meeting was short, consisting mostly of discussion with Paige Weston on functionality and performance (anticipated) of WebVoyage 7.
    • Since the meeting have been discussing via e-mail ways to improve the too-brief "brief" display in Universal Catalog in WV7.  Hope to have an enhanced brief display ready to roll out by early July.
  • Resource Sharing Team did not meet since the last IUG meeting.

CARLI Office report:

  • The upgrade to Voyager 7.1 went faster than anticipated.
  • CARLI staff are monitoring the performance of WV7, adding memory and tweaking parameters as needed; have discovered that the TOMCAT database crashes unexpectedly for unknown reasons; also that search sessions have not been properly closing after the allotted time, which has been holding up server resources, and are working on solutions.
  • CARLI staff have been communicating with users that the brief display in WV7 was "out of the box," and that a more adequate display is in the works; also have been communicating with users that many local customizations could not be done before the upgrade, but will continue to work on them after the upgrade.
  • CARLI staff are working on a cluster of roll-outs over the summer, to re-introduce our usual customizations, and an enhanced brief display.
  • CARLI board is considering accepting new I-Share members in Summer 2010; if so, then there will be no major upgrades to Voyager at that time.
  • Serials Solutions will stop offering WebFeat next year; CARLI will not do an RFP for a new federated search product.
  • This summer there will be a 30-day trial of a new SFX service called BX, which provides recommendation links for related journal articles.
  • UIUC has developed  “EZ Search,” a home-grown federated search product; and has contacted CARLI for possible collaboration.

Agenda discussion:

  • Reviewed FY 2009 activities; discussed IUG FY 2009 annual report
  • Plans for next year
    • Began discussion of possibly moving to more conference call meetings throughout the year.
    • Discussed a possible ad hoc task force to run an annual statistics forum or Wimba session.
    • Discussed need to monitor activities of the Usability Testing volunteers and of the Cataloging of Electronic Resources task force.
    • Discussed inviting members of the IUG teams to call in or attend all or part of IUG meetings; a different team each meeting.
    • Discussed possible task force to study relationships between copyright and licensing agreements of online full-text sources.
    • Will need new liaisons next year for ICAT, Instruction, and Resource Sharing.
  • Approved the final version of the charge for the CAT/ER task force.
  • Approved the call for volunteers for Usability Testing and CAT/ER; these will be open the entire month of July.
  • Future of the ILS
    • Reviewed the compiled comments from ILS discussion at the Liaisons' Forum and Library Directors' Forum.
    • Compiled comments will be posted to the CARLI website.
    • Discussed whether IUG should engage with a wider range of readings (e.g., OCLC's recent report "Library Catalogs: What Users Want" or attend a relevant seminar/webinar.
