  2. Announcements and updates from CARLI and IUG

    CARLI
    • The slowdown is fixed temporarily, but it is not intended to be permanent. They are working on a more permanent fix, and this may be a possible reconfiguration of the system.
    • On September 20, the first ever CARLI All-Chairs meeting will be held in Champaign.
    • On September 13-15, there is a symposium on the Future of Integrated Library Systems, also to be held in Champaign, presented by the Lincoln Train Libraries System.

    IUG
    • IAcq/Ser team – is looking at Electronic Resource Management Systems A forum is planned for Nov 29 “Clean up your Acq”
    • ICAT team – Susan Braxton chair person (forum Nov. 13). Susan Singleton met with them & discussed WorldCat local, AquaBrowser, VU-find and other “front end” products.
    • The ICAT team is talking about a possible joint program or forum with Digital Collections Users Group in the spring.
    • Margaret Chambers, Executive Director of Communications for CARLI attended last IUG meeting. Discussed various means of distance forum participation including phone-in, webcast, and using Wimba.
    • Margaret also writes the newsletter for CARLI and would like each teams “high points” from their meetings for inclusion.
    • The CARLI blog is set up and team chairs will be registered in order to publish on it. It will also allow for guest bloggers to publish their highlights from the CARLI forums (for those who cannot attend).
    • There is a mentoring program called “Forum Friends” being established, and the IUG is developing guidelines for this program. People can register as either a mentor or a mentee. The mentor will guide the mentee at the IUG forums in order to familiarize them with all the forums offer. The mentor will contact the mentee beforehand via email to work out details on meeting at the forum. The IUG Instruction Team Forum in November is the first that will be using this system.

  3. Forum Planning -- Nov 7, 2007 at Heartland Community College

    Agenda
10:00 am – 10:20 am Welcome and Survey Results (Molly), CARLI announcements (Lorna)
10:20 am – 11:30 am Speaker re: Teaching and Learning – “Authentic Teaching” (Beth Woodard – UIUC)
    11:40 am – 12:20 pm Breakout Sessions (3 options – see below)
    12:20 pm – 1:00 pm Lunch
1:00 pm – 1:45 pm Breakout Session (3 options repeated – see below)
2:00 pm – 3:00 pm Speaker re: Assessment “Best Practices in Library Instruction Assessment.” (Karen Brown – Dominican University.)
3:00 pm – 3:15 pm Closing Remarks (Molly or Lorna)

    Breakout sessions
    • Roundtable topics from Beth¹s session – Team members Terry, Chad, Kent, and Molly will attend the first session; Team members Kathleen, Randi, Stephanie and Susan will attend the second session. The Team should prepare some topics ahead of time, if possible, to encouage discussion.
    • Technology (Amy and Joe coordinating) -- Panel Members: Connie Ghinazzi (Augustana) on clickers, Lydia Jackson (SIUE) on wikis; and a possible third person from Benedictine.
    • Instituting Change, panel discussion (Lorna coordinating) -- Panel Members: Ryan Roberts (Lincoln Land CC), Mike Westbrook (Illinois College), Sue Peterson (Benedictine) are definite. Lorna may get two more people as well. What are they doing differently since Immersion to change their program/or teaching? Did they change their personal style of teaching? Was there more of an institutional change? A few questions will be composed to start the discussion.

Molly talked with Karen Brown and she has accepted the invitation to be the afternoon speaker. The topic will be “Best Practices in Library Instruction Assessment.” Also, Lorna sent out a copy of the Forum Evaluation Form to the Team. The topics will be added at a later meeting, and the ability to rank programs will possibly be added.

  4. Forum promotion

A “save the date” email was sent out with the basic forum information. A later follow up email will be sent with more detailed schedule and speakers. When the registration email goes out, a link will be provided for the full agenda, as well as a registration link on the CARLI calendar. This means that the information on all the sections of the day will be need to be to Jessica and Lorna by September 19, so that it can be given to the webmaster by September 26. Also, there will be registration for each of the breakout sessions, in order to determine room size for each session.

  5. Instruction Wiki

A plan needs to be created for the goals and organization of this wiki. Joe, Kathleen, Randi, Molly, Lorna, and Jessica will have a conference call on this. Also, Joe and Kathleen will “seed” the wiki with a few items, and then the team will hopefully get input from others. There will be promotion of the wiki during the forum, either during the opening or closing remarks. Finally, there will be a “suggested topics for the wiki” section on the forum evaluation.

  6. Other Business: It was decided that part of the IUG Instruction Team agenda will be a mutual discussion on what the “bullet points” for each meeting should be included for the CARLI newsletter Once they have been decided, Randi will submit them to Margaret.

The next meeting will be a conference call on Monday, October 15, 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Respectfully Submitted,

Amy Glass
