Electronic Resources Working Group Minutes
December 8, 2008
Attendance: Jeannette Pierce, Cindy Clennon, David Hamilton, Elizabeth Clarage, Laurie Sauer, Chris Sweet, Sarah Wessel, Sara Miller, Sara Blaszczak, Linda Carlisle, Gwen Harrison
- Announcements
David Hamilton provided an update on the fall selections. The selection closed Nov. 26. Almost every institution that participated last year renewed this year (1-2 did not) for a total of 67 libraries participating this year (68 participated last year). There were a couple of new schools this year. This selection list represents just over $2,000,000 in pass through money.
- Review of new and current proposals
New proposals
World Bank Online -- 5 CARLI members currently subscribe to some combination of the online products. We decided there is enough interest to pursue this product since the information is core to academic libraries, and because it appears that libraries can subscribe to individual products--they do not have to subscribe to the whole package. We are hoping the offer will last until early next year and Cindy is checking to see if there are date constraints on the proposal. The committee is leaning toward sending out the proposal to the membership in January.
Continuing proposals –
IGI InfoSci -- No new information yet.
Springer E-Book Proposal – The vendor questioned CARLI as to whether they should pursue agreements with individual libraries or work on a consortium agreement. Cindy advised vendor to work with libraries individually. The offer closes in a week.
Proquest//Tribune Offer -- This was revised in the selection system so libraries had the opportunity to select it here. Six libraries did not renew the ProQuest product from last year and we’re wondering why.
Palgrave Dictionary of Economics -- There is a new sales rep; they have offered the product with a new pricing proposal, which is a bit more favorable. The committee is still in favor of drafting a letter supporting Jeffrey Archer’s letter stating displeasure with Palgrave’s pricing model and Cindy will tackle this as time allows.
Web of Science – Cindy heard from some more libraries saying the product is good but it’s just too costly. There is no point in reviewing this offer further.
- Old business
E-resource wish lists – Discussion deferred until a later date.
Licensing conference – Attendance: 13 no-shows; 82 attendees. 70 evaluations were returned, with the comments overwhelming positive. Things the audience liked were the sample language, workflows, and demystifying the process. There were some comments from participants about the program fitting better with workflows in large libraries, and that small libraries felt it didn’t benefit them as much. There were many comments from people who wanted the program to be longer. Some wanted it to be more interactive. Many wanted the workshop repeated. Presenter got great marks.
There was discussion in the committee about what to do next. We are considering doing Part II as a follow-up to this session, or possibly offering the workshop again. The committee felt that offering it on an annual basis might be too frequent.
DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals) Membership Request -- Jeannette will write something up for Cindy to send to the Board about where we’re at with this.
E-Book Survey – We went over the questions. Jeannette will revise and resubmit to the committee for further commenting. She will also send the draft to the ebook symposium committee. The goal is to make the survey active in January.
- New business
Ebook conference -- Elizabeth reported that the call for proposals has gone out. The location is going to be the Hawthorne Suites (next to the CARLI office). The conference will be only 1 day, March 4, with no vendor showcase scheduled for the following day. There’s still a question about whether or not to have the showcase in some other way, possibly in early morning or late afternoon.
One-time Purchase Program -- CARLI Board met last Friday and decided the one-time purchase program for the 3rd year is suspended. The Board is disappointed with the uptake from the membership on the one-time purchases to date. We needed to raise $480,000 and have $306,000 to date. There may come a time when CARLI will have to offer these products to everyone either at a reduced rate or free. We discussed making another appeal to those libraries who haven’t opted in--using a direct letter via snailmail. David reported that the CARLI web development team is looking into making these one-time purchase options available on the web site selection system in a parallel format to the subscription selection system. Cindy will confer with Susan about how to notify the membership about the demise of the program.
