E-Resources Working Group Minutes
April 7, 2008
Attendees: Cindy Clennon, David Hamilton and Elizabeth Clarage (CARLI); Gwen Harrison (Illinois State Library); Sarah Wessel (Illinois Wesleyan University); Jeanette Pierce (Loyola University); Jeff Matlak (Western Illinois University); Wendy Shelburne (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign); Laurie Sauer (Knox College); Sara Blaszczak (University of Illinois at Chicago)
Unable to attend: Chris Sweet (Heartland Community College) and Tom Dorst (CARLI)
- Approved minutes of March meeting.
- David Hamilton reported on the good responses received concerning the Spring Selection. The responses represent 16 individual libraries, 177 individual titles, at $542,000 worth of databases. People are having success. Cindy reported that folks are attuned to the process, and some signed up during the “soft” release.
- The new CARLI E-Resource Listserv now has 186 members signed up. Cindy desired feedback from the committee concerning the attachment that rolled out with the Spring Selection. The committee agreed that it was helpful and to continue adding this information.
- New and existing proposals were reviewed with actions noted below.
a. Oxford Scholarship Online
Discussion: The product is wonderful. No credit for what you already have is given this is a potential problem.
Action Taken: The committee would like to see pricing.
b. Palgrave Dictionary of Economics
Discussion: The discount is not that much. It is not the only dictionary in its field. It is not unusual for vendors to offer a discount anyway if we decided to not play ball considering it is not a substantial discount.
Action Taken: The offer has been declined.
c. Palgrave and Nature (not on agenda)
Discussion: Cindy has been working on putting something together for the above items. As this moves forward, we will be kept posted.
Action Taken: None.
d. Credo Reference
Discussion: The proposal is a subsidized offer for everyone. It is a cool product. It is being offered as a one-time purchase, but the entire product does not belong to Credo. Jeffrey LaPlante(former salesman) has left the company. The new interface would be appealing to students. This resource is available in the Spring Selection. Credo seems to be confused about the process and what they can/cannot commit to.
Action Taken: Clarification from the company on the offer.
e. Gale e-book trial and offer to CARLI members
Discussion: It has been scaled back, members are allowed to pick their own titles and put together packages that are appropriate for their institution. The offer is being given independent of CARLI putting together the deal. As CARLI members purchase titles the numbers are counted for the whole (the entire CARLI membership). 75 titles is the first threshold where deeper discounts kick in. This offer went out to CCG as well. How will libraries know how many titles have been purchased by consortia members? They will have to contact GALE.
Action taken: None.
f. BEPress Update
Discussion: Not really compelled to buy multiple titles from a single provider. Not enough interest. The offer is not well put together. The proposed discount is only for new subscriptions. Presently, an agreement is held with the e-resource, Research Now.
Action taken: Not interested, not titles we would normally purchase.
g. Lib Guides
Discussion: Perhaps, this is a tool and not a content product. It will be directed towards the Collections Working Group.
Action taken: Eventual removal from proposal status page.
h. Oxford DRS
Action taken: Offer has been declined.
i. Simply Maps (Not on agenda)
Discussion: Jeanette offered that this resource was trialed at her library and has been enormously popular with students and faculty.
Action taken: Next month we will revisit this resource.
5. Old Business
- Licensing training: The results of the survey launched March 29th were included in today’s agenda. Many survey respondents are willing to pay for training.
Discussion: Stakeholders are excited about the survey.
Action Taken: We will go forward and get pricing from ALCTS to provide the training.
- One time purchases
Discussion: The CARLI newsletter stated that the board has approved the purchases. We await approval from Procurement as well. An announcement will be made again; pricing will be available after the Spring Selection System closes. Pricing for individual libraries has been completed. It is apparent that pricing is less than if the libraries pursued pricing on their own.
Action taken: Cindy will send out the announcement to both listservs. The rollout has been stalled to eliminate confusion with the selection system.
- New member pages
Discussion: CARLI now has new member pages. It showcases a dynamic list to show what you currently acquire through CARLI membership. It is packed with lots of information.
Action taken: It was suggested that an email of support and/or the recommendation of small changes for the site be sent.
- E-Book Symposium
Discussion: The Collections Working Group has been busy working on other tasks that take precedent.
Action Taken: None
6. New Business
- Due to the Wiley-Blackwell merger, a discussion is desired perhaps at ALA to discuss future plans. The contract with Blackwell expires October 2008.
- The CARLI Groups page is where sign-up for committee volunteers are solicited. It was suggested that this committee send out a Spring/Fall survey asking members to alert the committee to new products. And perhaps a “Suggestion box” could be added to the ERWG committee web page as well. This would be done to solicit interest prior to the selection process.
- Concerning consortia agreements, is there a threshold at which the committee will not entertain an offer? Does the committee agree that there should be a minimum of 3 or 5 libraries necessary for an offer to go forth?
Next meeting date: May 12, 2008 at 1:30 – 3:00 p.m.
