Background

The Cataloging Electronic Resources/Electronic Resources Display in the OPAC Task Force produced a Final Report dated February 11, 2004. The Final report was approved by the ILCSO Users’ Advisory Group on February 13, 2004 and the ILCSO Board of Directors on April 12, 2004. An excerpted report, highlighting specific recommendations from the initial report, was produced by the I-Share Cataloging and Authority Control Team in October 2006.

Original charge of the initial task force:

  • Document present standards for the cataloging of electronic resources
  • Identify best practices for cataloging of electronic resources in ILCSO’s consortial environment
  • Investigate options for clear and effective display of electronic resources in the OPAC

Scope of Work

Review the initial Cataloging Electronic Resources/Electronic Resources Display in the OPAC Task Force Report (2004), the ICAT excerpt document (2006) and the current electronic resource environment with regard to Voyager in its current version, future discovery layers and a next generation ILS, as well as other emerging trends in the electronic resource environment. Based on this review the Task Force should:

  • Document needed changes to the Report and provide additional recommendations as appropriate.
  • Identify current best practices and additional issues related to the cataloging of, access to, and display of electronic resources in I-Share’s consortial environment.
  • Identify related issues concerning access to electronic resources that are outside of this charge and make recommendations to the IUG for additional action.

Outcomes

  • Revised report for use by the membership incorporating the recommended changes documented above.
  • Related issues for further review that fall outside the charge of the Task Force.
  • Recommendations related to issues that require future consideration and action by IUG as systems develop and change.

Timeline

The Task Force should determine the exact time needed for their work. A tentative target date for the completion of the work by the Task Force is April 2010, but this can be changed upon further analysis by the Task Force. An initial assessment of the scope of work by the Task Force, including an approximate timeline and possible recommendations for related issues that fall outside the scope of work, should be presented to IUG by November 1, 2009.

Membership

The Task Force may include representation from ICAT, IACQ, OPAC, and the E-Resources Working Group, together with a call for volunteers from the membership with expertise in cataloging electronic resources, familiarity with the issues related to the display of electronic resources in the OPAC, or a broad general knowledge of the organization and presentation of various types of electronic resources The total membership on this committee should not exceed twelve.
