Membership Agreement

The mission of CARLI is to lead Illinois academic libraries to create and sustain a rich, supportive, and diverse knowledge environment that furthers teaching, learning, and research through the sharing of collections, expertise, and programs.

There are three levels of membership in CARLI (Governing, Associate and Basic) which offer access to varying products, services, and programs. The obligations and benefits of each level of membership, in addition to those set forth in this Membership Agreement, will be as determined from time to time by the CARLI Board of Directors.

While individual member libraries retain autonomy over their own operations, participation in a consortium requires collaboration and commitment to the consortium. As a consideration for acceptance and continuation of any level of membership in CARLI, the institution agrees:

  1. To abide by the Bylaws of the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois and the common policies, protocols, rules and regulations adopted by the Consortium.
  2. To assume and pay promptly any and all financial obligations arising from membership and participation in services offered through the Consortium.
  3. To affirm that CARLI membership does not replace institutional obligations to maintain and enhance library collections, staff, and technological infrastructure.
  4. To act in accordance with all terms and conditions of contractual agreements made by CARLI and its business and contractual agent, the University of Illinois, on behalf of member libraries and to accept responsibility for the acts or omissions of its own employees related to such agreements.
  5. To maintain current awareness of CARLI policy issues, system developments and library responsibilities to the Consortium. Governing and Associate members will provide ongoing appropriate representation at CARLI membership meetings. Additionally, Governing members will provide staff representation and voluntary service to various committees, task forces and forums sponsored by CARLI.

Failure to comply with these terms and conditions may lead to the imposition of sanctions or membership termination as specified in the Consortium’s bylaws, and other legal actions arising from the member library’s contractual obligations with vendors and service providers as may be appropriate.
