Ideas from Paula Kaufman on how to extend our capability.
- Advocacy. Invest in an advocacy capability (contract with a firm, hire someone) who can concentrate on providing strategies, contacts, and support for the AVP/ED, the board, and others to advocate for academic libraries in Illinois
- Extend digital library products - add additional product, extend to non-ILCSO libraries
- Shared storage, for physical and/or digital items
- Digitize Illinois-related materials held in CARLI member libraries; create a shared repository; provide search and access mechanisms, preservation, archiving. Provide training and support for digitization in academic libraries
- Invest in a real grantsmanship capability - identify sources, build and work connections with federal, state, and private funding agencies, write grants, manage grant projects, etc.
- Training, training, training. I think it's great that IUAG and others provide all those opportunities, but they're dependent on our staff volunteers and they can't move nimbly enough. Invest in a training capability.
- Preservation - from disaster planning to training to conversion.
- Share digital copies of brittle books that have been reformatted on acid-neutral paper
- Collections - extend electronic resources. Experiment with shared print archives of online equivalents (a la CIC)
Some more ideas from Linda Morrissett
Permanent commitments
to the statewide collection support, especially:
- Statewide digital collections (building and sharing)
- Permanent access to core content archive (e.g. historical Chicago Tribune)
- Last copy repository: storage for unique items, digitization of unique, brittle items
Some ideas I (Mary Munroe) had that I don’t see here:
- Think about archives of e-journals in the state
- Support institutional repositories
- Share expertise among member libraries – cataloging foreign languages, technology expertise, library instruction and information literacy best practices
- Work nationally to support new forms of scholarly communication
- Continue professional development as well as training.
- All of this in addition to shared purchasing of electronic resources.
Ideas from Bernie Sloan:
- Consider making digital library products available to other libraries beyond the original 65 ILCSO libraries, Original pricing is for the 65 ILCSO libraries. Adding other libraries will require additional fiscal resources.
- Investigate feasibility of consortially offering an electronic resource management (ERM) system
- Add new libraries to ILLINET Online
